Institute for Resource Management and Economic Development (IRMED) is an autonomous non-governmental, non-profit organization dedicated to the cause of public service. Established and managed by a group of eminent multi-disciplinary professionals, the Institute has developed a high level of competence and has also acquired an international reputation for high quality output. Its focus is on comprehensive and integrated approach to development and management of basic resources like land, water, forests, energy, manpower which have profound impact on welfare of the public.
Guided by the objectives of sustainable, equitable and optimum utilization of basic resources, IRMED pursues an inter-disciplinary approach in it's activities. IRMED realizes that welfare, development and environmental aspects are interlinked with each other. Socio-economic and institutional evaluation of resource development projects and policies constitutes one of its core activities. Gender studies has been another such area. Special attention is paid to poverty alleviation related aspects. The scope is multi-sectoral covering both rural and urban areas. In order to achieve, its objectives IRMED has been conducting research and training programmes, organizing policy dialogues, seminars, workshops and conferences at local, national and international levels, providing residential and other facilities to outside scholars and organizing other activities giving attention to both environment and development related aspects.
Over the years, the institute has grown into a major centre for socio-economic and institutional studies with its own spacious building having all necessary facilities and equipment with an impressive record of activities most of which have been sponsored by different ministries of Government of India such as the Ministries of Water Resources, Agriculture, Rural Development, Urban Development, HRD, Finance, and Planning Commission State Government of NCT of Delhi, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh and international agencies like World Meteorological Organisation of UN, Global Water Partnership, International Development Research Centre, Ford Foundation etc. Though located in Delhi, IRMED has a vast network throughout India and has the distinction of carrying out field studies at the grass root levels in almost all the states of India. Apart from the staff at the head quarters, the Institute has a panel of eminent experts located in Delhi and other parts of the country. They work as consultant to the institute on full or part-time basis as per requirement. The Institute's efforts have resulted in substantial additions to knowledge base and useful policy recommendations. It has brought out several policy oriented reports and publications on aspects related to water and land management as well as rural development, poverty alleviation and gender studies.
