Registered in 1983 under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1960, the Institute has grown into a major national centre with considerable international repute. It is also registered under the Income Tax Act as well as Foreign Contribution Regulation Act.
The Institute is concerned with aspects related to welfare and development of people, specially those belonging to the weaker section as well as women. It deals with socio-economic, institutional and environmental aspects of rural and urban development involving utilization of resources like land, water, forests, manpower etc. It takes up studies and research, undertakes field surveys, impact evaluation work and micro level planning, conducts training programmes for in-service officers and managers, provides computer education to students, organizes policy dialogues, seminars & conferences giving attention to welfare, environment and development. The Institute has completed several projects and programs under the above heads.
The Institute has also taken up welfare and development schemes for the public specially those belonging to the weaker sections. Its activities include helping other professionals pursuing similar studies. In this context, the Institute provides facilities like lodging and boarding, office and research support etc. to scholars from India and abroad, details of which can be obtained from the Institute.
The Institute has its own spacious building in an easily accessible area in Delhi. It has a growing library, a large computer centre, seminar/class rooms, guest house facilities and all basic equipment.
